Rota-rod
This task is used to assess motor coordination and balance. With repeated trials over days, motor learning can be tested.
Procedure
The subject is placed on a cylinder that can rotate at constant or accelerating speeds. Control and experimental subjects are compared for their ability to remain on the rod either by latency to drop off or the final speed achieved by the accelerating rod before they fall. Up to 4 mice or rats can be tested at a time on our current equipment.
